The scene cleared and the squire, returning to his almost forgotten conversation with George, with difficulty questioned, “George, I heard some distressing news from your father last night. He told me that you and Collett are thinking about leaving England. Is that true?”
Without waiting for a response, the squire continued, “How long have you two been married, a year maybe?”
He knows, thought George. Oh, I was concerned that he might want to see me today. I have to be truthful and tell him. “Yes, sir, with all due respect, sir, we are. I want to be sure as to where we should go, but we don’t see a future here in England. I have friends that have left England. We are young, nevertheless. We are both of one mind and have the same belief. We just do not see ourselves ever getting ahead in this country. If we do not leave, we will remain just as we are today. We both want more from life. We don’t have a family yet, so now is the time.”
“Well,” mused the squire as he returned to his buggy, “will you and Collett meet with the vicar and me before you absolutely make up your final position?”
“Yes, we will do that. Father and Mother would fancy that.” The squire turned his horse and trotted off, leaving George with his thoughts.
Fine, now it’s out in the open, and I can deal with it. He returned to his work, but then changed his mind. He decided that he had had enough for the day. He cleaned his tools and within a half-hour, saddled up his horse and headed for home near the town of Lostwithiel at the head of the Fowey River to his lovely young wife, Collett.
The house was small, just one room with the kitchen at the front and the bed at the back. It worked well for the young couple who were still finding new emotions in their fresh young love.
