- Lostwithiel Tudor Bridge -

It is believed to have been built of wood by the Norman Lords. The name, Lostwithiel, was documented in the charter of 1189. The Tudor era was between 1485-1603. In 1644 during the Civil War the bridge narrowly escaped being blown up.

As this medieval Bridge is in the center of our Kin Folk’s community they would have crossed over it many times. In they were Stone Masons’ they may have been involved with some of the construction aspects of the projects.

“Did you fancy that pasty?” she hesitantly questioned.

“I did.”

She impishly persisted. “Better than the one last week?”

He questioned himself. “I don't know.”

“The one last week was with venison and swede. The one today was chicken with turnip.”

“In a pasty covering, I never can taste the difference between a swede and a turnip.”

“I agree. The taste of the pasty jacket hides the sweet, slightly peppery turnip, while a swede tastes milder than a turnip, almost like a carrot.”

He looked at her with disgust.

She caught his attitude. “Oh, I would never make it with carrots.”

He smiled with relief.

She continued. “At home, Mother used pork, beef, rabbit, bacon, mackerel, skirt steak, apple, fig, chocolate, bananas, potatoes—”

She caught herself. “I can’t go on. I am running out of breath.”

They laughed, and George spoke. “Mother often used the leftovers from the previous night’s supper. Father often said that the Devil himself was afraid to cross over into Cornwall for fear of ending up in a pasty.”

“I really fancy it with stilton, but that’s too expensive for our everyday meals.”

That’s another reason for pursuing a better life for our children. Maybe they will be able to eat as much stilton as they fancy.

Shannon's Recipe Corner

Notice the uniqueness of this Cornish Pasty with its two distinct side by side (not touching) pockets. The larger one houses the main meat vegetable event while the smaller compartment contains the dessert portion for a truly balanced lunch.

Due to the presence of COVID- 19 symptoms in our house Shannon has not been able to proof test a suitable recipe. Please accept her apology.
