July 4th, 1863: The Last Glimpse of Tranquility Before Chaos - A Story from Gettysburg

July 4th 1863

This scene depicts the very last tranquil moment before the Southern soldiers in their chaotic retreat from Gettysburg appear.

They are half a step from entering the scene.

Pure Virgin Tranquility of this magnitude will never return to the Battlefield.

Newspapers throughout the land were starting to buzz with their story:

Custer’s Michigan Wolverine’s repel Stuart’s Cavalry at Gettysburg

On the afternoon of July 3rd on the east side of the small town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the newly assigned commander to the Michigan Cavalry Units, General George Armstrong Custer fought off General Robert E. Lee’s General J. E. B. Stuart’s Confederate Cavalry. In conjunction with an infantry frontal attack by Lee’s General George Pickett, first reports are that Stuart’s Cavalry was attempting to attack the rear position of the Army of the Potomac near the Gettysburg Cemetery. Pickett’s massive assault broke through the Potomac line, but his anticipated reinforcements had not arrived and the would-be victory was repelled within minutes.

After days of difficult fighting, the decisive victory on July 3rd, by the Army of the Potomac, came as a result of an unsuccessful infantry charge by the Confederates under the command of General George E. Pickett. Today in the middle of a rainstorm, Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia is in full retreat!
