Check out a ‘snowy treat’ and homemade ‘tree Christmas dressings,’ time-honored, nearly two centuries past.
The following is an excerpt from Whispers from Kith and Kin- Gettysburg Part One, page 57. Our story is available at: Whispers from Kith and Kin : Hill, Gerald Lorne, Hill, Shannon Jane: Amazon.ca: Books

After returning from church and with supper over, George brought in the tree and set it in its handcrafted wooden stand. Brightly colored bits of red yarn were wound onto discarded wooden spools. Popcorn was strung with thread and salt and flour were mixed with oil and made into modeling clay before being handcrafted into various shapes, stars, bells, angels, and round balls. They were finally assembled onto a long string and tied to tree branches.
The family had all contributed during many early winter evening hours in preparation. As Collett finished washing up the evening meal dishes and the boys strung the last string of popcorn balls, Collett recalled her idea for the snow. She gleefully suggested, “Quick, Phillip, whilst that snow outside is so fresh and white, go get me some, and we will make snow ice cream.”
